How often should a Toyota or Lexus hybrid be serviced?

A hybrid needs servicing like any car, plus a few checks that only make sense on a hybrid. Here is the schedule and what should be done.

A Toyota or Lexus hybrid needs regular servicing like any car. In some ways it is easier on itself: the engine is often switched off, and much of the braking is done by the motor. In other ways it has more to look after, because there is a high-voltage battery and power electronics that need to stay cool.

How often

For most Toyota and Lexus hybrids in the UK, the manufacturer's schedule is a service every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. The exact schedule depends on the model and year, so your service book is the final word. Bring it along and we follow it.

What a hybrid service should include

  • Engine oil and filter, and the other filters on the schedule
  • Fluids: engine coolant, the separate inverter coolant, brake fluid
  • Hybrid battery cooling fan and intake cleaned and checked
  • Brakes inspected and cleaned, including the calipers, which can stick from little use
  • The 12V auxiliary battery tested
  • Hybrid system checked for stored faults
  • Tyres, suspension, lights and the usual safety checks

The hybrid-only items people forget

Battery cooling. The hybrid battery has its own cooling fan and air intake, usually near the rear seats. Dust and pet hair build up and the battery runs hotter, which shortens its life. Cleaning it is a small job that protects the most expensive part of the car.

Inverter cooling. The inverter, which drives the electric motors, has its own cooling circuit. Its coolant level and pump should be checked, because an inverter that overheats can limit the car's power.

Brakes. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used less. They can rust and stick if they are not cleaned and checked.

Taxi, private hire and high-mileage cars

A hybrid doing private hire work can cover 10,000 miles in a few months. Follow the mileage, not the calendar, and do not stretch the interval: stop-start city driving is hard work for oil, brakes and cooling. Booking the MOT and the service together saves a day off the road.

Service history and warranty

A full service record helps the car's value and its warranty. An independent service done to the manufacturer's schedule with the right parts keeps the standard warranty. Some extended warranty programmes, such as Toyota and Lexus Relax, are renewed only by servicing in the dealer network, so if you rely on one, ask us before you book.
