The MOT for hybrid and electric cars: what is checked

Hybrids and electric cars take the same MOT as any other car, with a few differences worth knowing before test day.

Hybrid and electric cars take the same MOT as petrol and diesel cars, to the same DVSA standard. In Great Britain a car needs its first MOT at three years old and then every year. There are, though, a few differences worth knowing before test day.

What is checked on every car

  • Brakes and braking efficiency
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Suspension and steering
  • Lights, indicators and electrics
  • Windscreen, wipers, washers and mirrors
  • Seatbelts and safety systems
  • Body structure and corrosion
  • Emissions, where they apply

Emissions on a hybrid

A hybrid has a petrol engine, so it still has an emissions test. Because the engine stops and starts on its own, the tester needs it running during the test. Testers who know hybrids use the car's inspection mode, which keeps the engine running, so the test is done correctly.

Electric cars

A fully electric car has no exhaust, so there is no emissions test. Everything else is checked as on any car. Electric cars are heavy, which puts more load on tyres and suspension, so those deserve a look before the test.

The brakes: a hybrid's typical fail

Hybrids and electric cars do much of their braking by regeneration, using the motor to slow the car and charge the battery. The friction brakes are used far less. That sounds good, but brake discs that are rarely used can rust and calipers can stick, and that shows up on the MOT brake test. Regular use of the brakes and a brake check at the service help avoid it.

Warning lights

An engine warning light that stays on is an MOT fail, and so are some other warning lights, such as an airbag warning. If a light is on before your test, have it diagnosed first.

Easy checks before your MOT

  • Walk round the car with the lights and indicators on
  • Check tyre tread and look for cuts or bulges
  • Top up the screen wash and check the wipers clear the screen
  • Make sure the horn works and the number plates are clean and readable

When to book

You can have the MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. Booking a couple of weeks early leaves time for any repairs.

Our MOT

We are a DVSA-approved MOT centre testing petrol, hybrid and electric cars. The MOT is £35, including free collection within 5 miles. If your car fails, we explain every point, give you a no-obligation quote, and the retest is free when the repairs are done with us.
